FIRST Robotics -
The Townsend Harris Steel Hawks

The Steel Hawks Robotics (FRC 2601) Team was estabished at Harris in 2008 to participate in the US FIRST Robotics Competition. Our goal has been to provide our students with hands-on, real-world science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) experience. The program emphasizes the problem solving, teamwork, cooperation, and "gracious professionalism". The challenge the team must overcome, FIRST Overdrive, was revealed on January 5th, and the robot had to be shipped by Tuesday, February 19th. During the six weeks of the competition, Team Captains Tinya Cheng and Nischay Kumar and Robert Lum, Reynaldo Lopez, Warren Cheng, Dan Yan Yu and Erin Zeqja, spent many long nights and weekends with their advisors, Mr. Jones and Ms. Brustein. They were luck to have the assistance of Mr. Howard Rose, head machinist at Queens College, who volunteered his time to cut metal, plexiglas and complex wooden gears for us.

Participation in FIRST is expensive, but we were lucky to receive funding from both our PTA and Alumni Association as well as Queens College and Con Edison. We are especially grateful to Mr. Larry Ackman and Mr. Barry Weinberg. These kind benefactors, with no connection to our school, provided us with Rookie Grants that enabled our team to purchase start-up equipment. All interested students are welcome to join our Robotics Club. Meetings are held on Wednesday afternoons in Room 615. Please join us!
