  • We are very proud of our four finalists in the New York City Science and Engineering Fair! Tinya Cheng, Nischay Kumar, Tabassum Rahman, and Erin Zeqja have earned the right to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Atlanta, Georgia (May 11-16, 2008) as the representatives of New York City. Harrisites make up the largest contingent of the NYC delegation.

  • NYCSEF Awards were announced on Thursday, April 17th. 30 Science (18 seniors and 12 juniors) and 9 Social Science projects were submitted. More than half of the Science projects won awards! Congratulations to all our research students for their hard work, and kudos to their teachers, Ms. Brustein, Ms. Cooper, Ms. Eaton, Mr. Jones and Mr. Porzio.

    At the NYCSEF awards ceremony, our students were awarded four 1st place, four 2nd place and five 3rd place awards as well as 3 honorabl mentions. In addition, one student received a 1st place U. S. Army Award, two were awarded 2nd place awards, and six students were awarded 3rd place.

  • We proudly congratulate Warren Cheng who was awarded 2nd place in Physical Sciences at the 2008 NYC Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

  • Eight senior Science Research students will compete in the finals of the 2008 Junior Science and Humanities Symposium: Adiba Anam, Tinya Cheng, Warren Cheng, Nasrin Khandaker, Nischay Kumar, Julita Mienko, Caroline Raak, and Erin Zeqja. We wish our finalists continued success!

  • Harris's 3 Science Olympiad Teams took 4th, 7th and 8th places in the NYC Metropolitan Science Olympiad, capturing 25 medals and 16 additional 6th-10th place finishes. Kudos to the teams, Head Coach Mr. Sangiorgi and Assistant Coaches Ms. Cooper, Mr. Jones and Mr. Porzio. Harris's team will represent NYC at the state competition on March 14th-15th at West Point along with teams representing Stuyvesant and Cardozo High Schools.

  • Townsend Harris was a dominating force at the DANA Alliance Brain Bee (brain anatomy and physiology) yet again. Murrel Pereira was crowned the New York City Champion and Marvee Gay Espiritu, who took 4th place in this event went on to capture the Championship of the Long Island Brain Bee. Both Murrel and Marvee will compete in the National Brain Bee, March 14th -15th in Washington, D.C. This is the 5th consecutive year that Harris has placed within the top 3 in NYC, and the 3rd time as champions.

  • 19 juniors and 18 seniors exhibited their research projects at the NYC Math Science and Engineering Fair at City College on February 3rd. We proudly congratulate our Research Students and their teachers, Ms. Brustein, Ms. Cooper, Ms. Eaton and Mr. Porzio, for their success. More than 600 students submitted their independent social science or science research papers to this competition. More than 10% of the finalists in the first level of this competition are from Harris! We wish them all continued success in the final competition on March 10th. They are listed below.

  • 2006-2007

    • Adiba Anam was named a Siemens-Westinghouse Semi-Finalist.
    • Bushra Wazed was named an Intel Semi-Finalist.
    • 22 juniors and 15 seniors exhibited their research projects at the NYC Math Science and Engineering Fair (New York Academy of Sciences - 3/06/07). 17 of these students were finalists and went on to present their research projects at the New York Academy oF Sciences 3/07/07
      • Bushra Wazed, Markrete Krikorian, Ben Aronowicz, Warren Cheng and Erin Zeqja were finalists in the New York City Science, Math, and Technology Regional Fair.
      • Only 12 individual projects and 5 team projects were selected as finalists from more than 900 entries to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Albuquerque, New Mexico - (May 13th -19th)
        • Markrete Krikorian was awarded 4th place in Chemistry.
          Bushra Wazed was awarded 3rd place in Animal Behavior
          Ben Aronowicz, Warren Cheng and Eri Zeqja were awarded 3rd place in Physics for their team project.
      • Townsend Harris again was a dominating force at the DANA Alliance Brain Bee (brain anatomy and physiology). Joseph Lin and Sharon Pak, took 2nd and 4th places respectively in this competition.

        2005-2006

        • Maryam Sultan was named a Siemens-Westinghouse Semi-Finalist.
        • Sangsoo Kim, Maryam Sultan, Christie Sze and Anjie Zheng have been named Intel Semi-Finalists.
        • 19 juniors and 22 seniors presented their research projects at the NYC Math Science and Technology Expo (City College, 2/26/06)
        • 35 of these students were finalists in the EXPO competition, and went on to present their research projects at the NYC Science, Math, and Technology Regional Fair at Polytechnic University on 3/15/06 making Townsend Harris the largest contingent at the fair.
        • Students at this competition were awarded $420,000 in scholarships.
        • Alma Shi and Maryam Sultan were finalists in the New York City Science, Math, and Technology Regional Fair.
          Only 12 individual projects and 3 team projects were selected as finalists from more than 250 entries.
        • At the IndianapolisISEF, in May, Maryan Sultan won 4th Place Honors in Medicine and Health.
        • 10 Science and 2 Social Science students from Harris will present their research at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at the New York Academy of Sciences on March 28th: Annie Kim, Kevin Kwak, Lori Khrimian, Bonnie Lee, Apostolos Pittas, Amanda Pneuman, Atin Saha, Alma Shi, Maryam Sultan, Christie Sze, Razeen Zaman and Anjie Zheng.
        • Bonnie Lee and Alma Shi tied for second place in the The New York Metro Region of the Society for Technical Communications Excellence in Writing Competition at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium on March 28th.
        • Lori Khirmian took 4th place, and Alma Shi placed 5th, in the The New York Metro Junior Science and Humanities Symposium on March 28th. The top five finalists at the Metro JSHS regional symposium are awarded an expense-paid trip to the National Symposium.
        • Townsend Harris again was a dominating force at the DANA Alliance Brain Bee (brain anatomy and physiology). Stephanie Vance and Sharon Pak, took 3rd and 4th places respectively in this competition.
        • Townsend Harris students won 8 of the 28 awards at this year's Otto Burgdorf Research Competition. Awards were given to students scoring 90% or better in multiple judgings. We proudly congratulate:

          • Shauntè Baboumbian presented "Recent Data for the Archaeological Site, Obi-Rakhmat Grotto, in Uzbekistan" at the Archeological Society of America Annual Meeting, Salt Lake City, Utah, March 2005
          • Padmavati Sridhar's research, "Computational Identification of 11 Candidate Small Nucleolar RNAs in the Region of Human Chromosome 15 Associated with Prader-Willi and Angelman Syndromes", was published in BioMed Central.
          • Maria Wojakowski presented, "Emergence Patterns of the Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, NYC" at the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in Tampa, Florida, July 2005.
