ACADEMICS

Classroom Statistics:

  • 100% of our students complete three years of Regents Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), most students study Earth Science in Junior High School

  • Over 80% of our students complete four or more years of Science study.

  • More than 100 students are engaged in Science Research each year, both inside our own Science Research Lab and at major hospitals, universities and research institutions in, and around, NYC.

  • 23 of 26 students scored 4 or above on the Advanced Placement Psychology exam, earning college credit, with a class average of 4.4.

  • 87% of the AP Environmental Science students received a score of 3 or above on the Advanced Placement Exam (earning college credit) with a class average of 3.8

Regents Exam Statistics:

  • Last year, our passing percentage for all science Regents exams was over 98%.

  • We had 100% passing on the Living Environment Exam (Biology) with 70% achieving mastery (³85%).

  • 99% passing on the Chemistry Regents Exam with 64% achieving mastery (³85%)..

  • 94% passing on the Physics Regents Exam with 37% achieving mastery (³85%)...

  • Over the past ten years, EVERY YEAR, we have had the highest passing percentage in New York City each of the Science Regents exams.

Elective Options:

  • Students have a choice of many science electives taught at Townsend Harris including courses in Advanced Topics, Anatomy and Physiology, Astrophysics, Bio-Medical Ethics, Cosmology, Ecology, Forensic Science, Genetics, Organic Chemistry, Robotics, Science Research, Space-Time Physics, Advanced Placement Psychology and Advanced Placement Environmental Science.

  • Seniors and accelerated Juniors possessing the requisite Science and Mathematics skills may take courses in Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics or Psychology at Queens College for which they earn college credit.

Honor Societies:

  • 190 students were inducted into the Townsend Harris Chapter of New York State Science Honor Society (NYSSHS) in 2006.They achieved averages of 90%+ in Science, Mathematics and Overall.

  • 120 Harrisites received St. John's Women in Science and Mathematics Awards in 2006.

 SCIENCE RESEARCH @ HARRIS

Townsend Harris' Research Program continues to be a dominant force in high school research. The Science Research Program was featured in an hour-long YOUNG SCIENTISTS that aired on PBS on September 6, 2003.

Students interested in participating in Science Research may take advantage of our outstanding three-year Science Research Program that culminates in the submission of an independent research project to several prestigious competitions including Siemens-Westinghouse, INTEL, the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the Otto Burgdorf Research Competition, and the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. Students in this program can earn up to seven years of high school science credit during their high school career.


EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Publications, Academic Teams and Clubs:

  • The Science Department sponsors The Quantum Cat, a student run magazine which allows students to combine their interest in science with their literary and creative skills. It includes student research, science articles and science fiction as well as art and photography related to the sciences.

  • The Townsend Harris High School Journal of Student Research contains the abstracts of our students' award winning Science research.

  • In only our third year participating in Science Olympiad, we fielded three teams in the NYC Metropolitan Regional Competition. Our #1, #2, and #3 teams, placed 1st, 7th and 9th respectively, capturing 24 medals and numerous top 10 finishes along the way. We are very proud of winning the City Championship!

  • Our Science Olympiad Team was one of the teams that represented NYC in the NYS Science Olympiad at West Point on March 9th and 10th. We are very proud of our 16th place finish and the 5 medals and 5 additional finishes in the top 10.

  • PARTNERSHIPS

The Science Department enjoys a strong collaborations, formal and informal with many New York Institutions including:

  • LIJ-North Shore University Hospital

  • Queens College

  • Project G.L.O.B.E.
