Photography AC1

This course will be offered as an elective to students who have completed a required art class and have a foundation in the elements and principles of art. The class will focus on Photography as a medium of communication and a tool for self-expression. The objective will be to familiarize the students with the fundamentals of picture taking and darkroom skills, as well as the history and aesthetics of photography as an art form.

Prerequisite : Required Art or Sculpture

 

Printmaking - The Art of the Print APPM
This course will enable students to learn the fundamentals of two-dimensional design using the medium of printmaking. Group and individual projects stress the specificity of each medium. The techniques of block printing, collograph, monotype, and drypoint will be introduced. Students will create prints while exploring color theory, figure/life drawing, self- portrait and still life. Graphic and abstract designs will be developed as students learn to express themselves through the medium of printmaking.

Sculpture ADS1

This course is designed for students interested in exploring three dimensional design concepts. It will offer students the experience of carving wood, constructing wire and plaster forms, modeling clay and assembling designed forms made of various materials. All of the above experiences will enrich the students' awareness of aesthetics in relation to the subject of sculpture .

 

Technical Drafting ATDF

The technical drafting course will offer students a broad and thorough understanding of the mechanical drawing techniques used to record and convey design and engineering ideas in the fields of architecture, construction, industry, mechanics and electricity. The students will learn to lay out floor plans and elevations of buildings, make construction details, construct isometric (three-dimensional) drawings of machine parts, as well as compose schematic drawings for plumbing and three-dimensional models of patterns drafted .

Workshop in Artistic Exploration ADCA

This course is designed to explore two-dimensional and three-dimensional techniques including paper maché, collage, painting, and drawing, among others. Emphasis is on developing the individual's sense of color, form and design through hands-on experience. Projects are supplemented with related art history lessons which serve as guides toward stimulating the students' own creativity. The following are some examples of projects: paper maché masks/ Fantasy; composition/Surrealism; landscape collage/Fauvism, overlapping still life, composition/Cubism.

Media Art ATC1

 

The course offers students an in-depth opportunity to bridge the gap between technology and creativity. Various types of digital illustration, manipulation and creation will be explored to learn the techniques used by professionals in the commercial industry. Students will learn computer art technology and apply these skills to hands-on projects.

 

 

 

Art History AH1

The course offers students the ability to develop an understanding of the historical traditions in the visual arts, to teach students methods of analysis and interpretation of the meaning of works of art, and to help students learn to evaluate the quality of works of art. Students will acquire a group of skills, which enable them to solve problems, communicate effectively, and establish a system for evaluation based on both visual and written language.

 

Advanced Placement Art History AHX1

 

The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to art history. Students will be instructed on the diverse historical and cultural contexts found within each art period beginning with the ancient civilization up until the twentieth century. An understanding of the elements of art, fundamental art historical terminology and technical aspects used in the production of art will be emphasized. Students will gain comprehensive knowledge and understanding of architecture, sculpture, painting and other media.

Prerequisite : Art History or Art Exploration.

Requirements :

•  All students will have completed Art History or Art Exploration with a minimum 90% average.

•  Teacher recommendation and approval of the department supervisor.

Note: This is a two-semester course and cannot be dropped mid-year. In addition to Townsend Harris credit, students who score 3 or better on the AP exam may be awarded college credit upon successful completion of the Advanced Placement examination in May, which is required . There is an $82 examination fee.

 

 

Communication Media Arts ATM1

This course will focus on the written and technical components of broadcast media (radio and video) as well as stage production and presentation for both creators and consumers. Students will learn the basic principles of writing, speaking and production for broadcast media as well as criteria for evaluation of media. Students will also learn technical skills relevant to stagecraft presentation (sound, lighting, staging, scripting and film production.) Each student will be required to serve on a technical squad for school-wide presentations or multimedia events.

 

From Still to the Moving Image ACM1

This course will analyze media arts production and theory. It will provide the appreciation of the creative potential of moving image and other dynamic media. While this course emphasizes film, it is important to note the impact of photography within the film medium. The purpose of this inclusion is to help students acquire the historical understanding and artistic sensibility essential to produce high quality media work. Emphasizing the areas of film style, narrative structure and genre, lectures will provide an introduction to the common bond between still photography and filmmaking. Students will be provided with the basic conceptual tools needed to respond to and evaluate the artistic merits of individual works using digital computer cams, wireless images, digital video (Final Cut Pro), lectures, demonstrations and the critical viewing and evaluation of photographs and film clips. They will study camera operations, script writing, basic theory of materials and process, film exposure, timing, directing and editing.

Photojournalism FULL YEAR COURSE FOR SENIORS ONLY AFJL2

Seniors who are interested in photojournalism learn all aspects of yearbook production – from designing a cover and end sheets to compiling an index – for producing the school's yearbook in the spring term. Students select both an ideological and a graphic theme to unify their book. Students also learn how to assign, write, edit and enter copy on a computer; how to take and crop both color and black and white photographs; how to conduct a publicity campaign; how to select a graphic theme for each section and to lay out all spreads; and how to transfer the page layout of copy from final layout sheets to a computer program designed and used by a professional publishing company.

 

 

Photojournalism SPRING TERM JUNIORS ONLY AFJL 1

Juniors who are interested in photojournalism learn all aspects of yearbook production – from designing a cover and end sheets to compiling an index – in preparation for producing the school's yearbook in the spring term. Students select both an ideological and a graphic theme to unify their book. Students also learn how to assign, write, edit and enter copy on a computer; how to take and crop both color and black and white photographs; how to conduct a publicity campaign; how to select a graphic theme for each section and to lay out all spreads; and how to transfer the page layout of copy from final layout sheets to a computer program designed and used by a professional publishing company. This course is a prerequisite for Photojournalism.

 

Advanced Drawing and Painting Fall and Spring AMD1

This course concentrates on drawing as a design tool, from the initial stages of a concept's inception to its ultimate form in representation for studio review. The intent is to encourage fluency through intensive drawing and to discover the potential of the language of drawing through experiencing a variety of media, from charcoal and pencil to pastel and oil paint. Color will be an important aspect of our investigation: the role it plays in enhancing a sense of form, creating space and light.

Prerequisite: Workshop in Artistic Exploration or Art History

Requirements:

•  All students will have completed Workshop in Artistic Exploration or Art History with a minimum 88% average.

•  Teacher recommendation and approval of the department supervisor.

 

Independent Study AO

Independent study in art and/or approved Queens College course(s) are required for a three-year sequence in art.
